This is a short demonstration of using alla prima direct painting approach which is my preferred method of working. This composition with a baby lamb is perfect for studying the light which falls beautifully. Pay attention to varying background value - darker where we need more emphasis on the light on the baby’s head. Another important part is varying the edges, connecting the subject with the background and creating a bit of a light halo, which helps making the white more luminous. I am using earth colors - burned umber, burnt sienna, yellow oxide and ultramarine blue. The white is lead white by Michael Harding.
Finished painting, 16x12 in.
